Make a simple yet stunning subway tile backsplash by following our step-by-step guide ahead.

Materials:

  • Tile
  • Tile trim
  • Grout
  • Tile adhesive
  • Spacers
  • Trowel
  • Rubber float
  • Wet saw (or another cutting tool)
  • Speed square or level
  • Metal scraper
  • Tape measure
  • Sponge
  • Rag
  • Bucket

    How to Install Tile Backsplash:

    1. Measure the wall to plan the tile layout using a tape measure.
    2. Use the trowel to apply tile adhesive to a small starting section of the wall.
    3. Place spacers along the countertop and between the tiles as you apply them to the wall.
    4. Mark any tiles where you need to make size adjustments.
    5. Cut the tile with a wet saw.
    6. Once the cut tile is the right size, place it on the wall.
    7. Repeat the process until all of the tiles are installed, wiping excess adhesive as you go.
    8. Use a speed square or level to mark where your tile will end on the wall.
    9. Mark another line where the trim will go. Trim (aka rounded tiles) helps frame the backsplash, giving it a clean and polished look.
    10. Apply tile adhesive to the tile trim and place it on the wall.
    11. Repeat the process, making cuts when necessary and wiping excess adhesive as you go.
    12. Cut corner trim pieces at a 45-degree angle and repeat until all trim is installed.
    13. Let the backsplash dry for 24 hours.
    14. Remove the spacers.
    15. Lightly scrape and clean leftover tile adhesive.
    16. Mix grout (or use a pre-mixed option!).
    17. Holding a rubber float at a 45-degree angle, apply grout diagonally into the grout lines (aka those empty spaces between the tiles). Make sure the lines are filled completely. Clean excess grout from the tiles as you go.
    18. Let the grout harden according to the instructions and apply a sealant if needed.
